Recipe of the day 1/27/24

On this day in 1995 I got my DRIVERS LICENSE. I will never forget that date as it still is in my top 3 greatest moments of life. Yes now it seems silly but then I couldn’t believe the freedom I felt as a young, inquisitve, social butterfly living with an anti-social family, I love them so but I needed to get out and experience things they just didn’t need to. I understand it now, obviously I didn’t understand it then so getting my license was the greatest thing on earth to me at the time. Both my parents worked their butts of so when they were home they wanted to be home and I am grateful and thankful for all they did for me then because I sure didn’t share my thanks back then. I am pretty sure I was a huge PIA.

I get inspired to cook by watching others cook. I always love a good sit down session with a cookbook but I really get inspired by watching others cook so I love cooking shows. I am pretty sure the first person I ever watched on food network to get ideas from was the all famous THE PIONEER WOMAN. I don’t watch much of her shows now as her life has changed so much and I don’t relate as much but when my kids were young and I needed momma/ homemaker inspiration she was my BIG GO TO. She really helped me establish they way I try to run my home. I found her first ever cookbook the other day at a local thrift shop and grabbed it. I love seeing peoples humble beginnings. So as an ode to her, my OG of homemaking inspiration I am posting her cinnamon bun recipe from her first cookbook. The Good Ol’ days.

This was us in 2009 Mason and KC both are gone. Ethan is 22 and lives on his own and Natalie will be heading to HS next year.
But don’t worry Ed and I haven’t aged a day…

PW Cinnamon rolls

The Dough
  • 1 quart milk
  • 1 cup veg. oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 packages of active dry yeast or 4 1/2 tsp
  • 9 cups of All Purpose Flour
  • 1 heaping tsp of baking soda
  • 1 TBSP salt

Heat the milk, veg. oil and sugar on medium heat DO NOT LET IT BOIL set aside and allow to cool to lukewarm. yeast will die at around 120 and above so make sure the temp is around 110 before you add the yeast. when you add the yeast let it sit for about 3 minutes so the yeast has time to bloom. it will get foamy

Add 8 cups of flour, stir until just combined cover and let it proof for about an hour. remove the towel and add the baking powder, baking soda, and salt and remaining 1 cup of flour. stir thoroughly. you can use this dough right away or put in fridge overnight for the next morning. i had to bring this together with a bit more work than what seems to be shown so dont be afraid to put it back in the mixer with the dough hook and make sure its “smooth”

To assemble the rools. remove dough and cut in half and roll it out to a rectangle roughly 30×10 inches. pour 1 cup of melted butter over the rolled out dough and spread it out all over the surface leaving about a 1 inch border butter free… then sprinkle that with 2 cups of sugar and 1/4 cup of ground cinnamon and more sugar if needed. this is not a health dish don’t be afraid to use more butter and more sugar. then you roll it into a TIGHT log the long way so you get almost like a long spider of a yummy sugar sticky mess. seam all the seams together. make 1 1/2 inch slices and put into a pie pan or a casserole dish don’t overcrowd. they need more room to rise a bit. let rise at least half hour or until puffy and cute. heat oven to 375 after they have risen a bit about 30 minutes or so bake these babies for about 13-17 minutes

Maple Icing
  • 2 pounds powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 6 TBSP melted butter
  • 1/4 cup strong brewed coffee
  • dash of salt
  • 1 TBSP maple flavoring or maple extract or maple syrup if syrup use a tad less milk
