Christmas at Old Sturbridge Village

Christmas by candlelight

One of neighboring states is Massachusetts; they have a gem of a place called Old Sturbridge Village. It mimics a time I dream of living in; before electricity.! I have actually never been there during the day. I so far have only been for this event; Christmas by Candlelight! They host every year from Just after Thanksgiving to Dec.23. It’s pretty dreamy. It’s cold (bundle up), it’s dark (bring yourself a lantern), there are candles and christmas lights everywhere. Event though christmas lights were not a thing back in the day I let it go, it’s pretty. There are carolers singing, horse drawn wagon rides with folks singing christmas carols all around the square. There are many different buildings to venture into. The printer, the train house, the potter, the tin shop, the glass shop, the gingerbread house competition is always fun to judge. The stable with a few chickens, sheep and some cows, A big church light it bright sits atop the square and it’s just a lovely scene. If I lived closer (it’s 1.5 hrs away) I would work there and be one of those living in the past for the night. You can come home with a sweet bell ornament you made in the glass shop and an icicle ornament you made in the tin shop. I would suggest going on a Thursday evening during school (they offer maybe 2 Thursdays during the season) as it may not be too busy, i find the modern day people ( I do like modern day people just not here) in large quantities take away from the magic of the past. They are mainly open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Their Christmas page is no longer up but here is their link anyway: https://www.osv.org

They have an event coming up that is of interest to me called Evening of Illumination here is the link osv.org/event/evening-of-illumination/
